Week 11 Story: Why Sophomores Never Eat Canes

A group of 5 friends was leaving a class one day and all decided that they were hungry for lunch. They wanted to eat lunch on campus together in the South Oval, but nobody could pick the same place to eat. Everyone settled on picking their own restaurant and meeting each other after.

Daniel asked his friend Lexi where she was going to eat, and she told him that she was going to go to Chick-Fil-A in the Couch Cafeteria. Lexi left to get her Chick-Fil-A so the rest of them kept deliberating. Daniel then asked Katie what she wanted. Katie thought that Einstein's Bagels sounded good, so she went to get that while the other three stayed to choose. After Katie left, Daniel asked Jake what he was going to eat. Jake had been craving University Club in the Union all morning, but that's a sit-down restaurant, so he decided to just settle on a Couch Express grilled cheese. After all, it is one of the finest meals on campus. Jack headed to Couch Tower to grab his food, so that left only Daniel and Maddie.

Out of their group of five friends, Maddie is the only sophomore and the rest are freshmen. Since she's a sophomore, she doesn't get a meal plan and would have to leave campus to go get food. Maddie didn't want to pay for it, so she begged Daniel to let her use his Sooner Card at the Cane's Chicken in Adams Tower. This made Daniel nervous because his picture was on the Sooner Card and Maddie doesn't look much like him for very obvious reasons. He reluctantly agrees to let her use it anyway.

Maddie cheerfully heads to Canes, giddy with the thought of free food. She gets to the register and orders her food, ordering an extra side of fries of course, because it's not her money. When Maddie hands the woman at the register Daniel's card, she looks reluctant to take it. The woman asks Maddie if she's sure its her Sooner Card and Maddie tells her yes.

The woman at the register then calls the OU Police Department and reports Maddie for fraud and identity theft. Maddie ended up getting kicked out of the University and never even got her lunch.

To this day, if Freshmen use their meal exchange on someone else it's always at the Couch Cafeteria, and sophomores never eat at Canes.

Katharine Berry Judson. Why Deer Never Eat MenUn-Textbook

Author's Note

This story was based on the Native American tale, "Why Deer Never Eat Men." In the original tale, a rabbit asks his animal friends what they all want to eat. The bear eats acorns and fruit, the fish hawk a sucker, the wolf a deer, and the deer wants to eat Native Americans. They warned the rabbit that the humans were powerful but the deer tried anyway and was killed. After that, the rabbit said that deer could only eat grass and twigs so that's why they eat that to this day. I wanted to make this story fun and relatable to OU students, so I decided to make it about restaurants on campus and meal plans. Maddie is supposed to represent the deer.

  1. Hi Sydney :)
I really liked how you translated the animals and their meals into restaurants found on campus. That was a very fun twist! The only critique I have of this story is is you use a lot of conjunctions and commas, so your sentences tend to run on the longer side. I recommend breaking a lot of your longer sentences up into multiple smaller sentences. If you want to keep a sentence longer, I think only using one conjunction would work really well. Other than that, your story is great! :)

  2. Sidney,

I thought it was especially creative how you turned the Native American tale to something that the students at OU could absolutely relate to. I knew that from the title of the story, that it was going to have an unfortunate ending. During my freshman year, I had so much Cane's (mainly due to the fact that it was the only place that was open on campus after 9 PM) that I've built a resistance to it. Never again will I go to a Cane's and not feel sick to my stomach! Ultimately, I think that the OU PD did Maddie a service by kicking her out of OU so she can never have Cane's again. And I will stick by that statement.
