Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Sidney and I'm a sophomore here at OU. I'm studying Economics Pre-Law with minors in Spanish and Political Science. I'm taking this class because I was fully obsessed with Percy Jackson as a child. I love school and I thrive at school! I've wanted to be a lawyer since I was in middle school and I can and will argue with anybody. I work in the oil and gas industry as an accounting clerk and I'm considering pursuing oil and gas law after I get my bachelor's degree. After I graduate from OU, my goal is to go to law school at the University of Texas and live in Dallas after! My favorite course I've taken at the university so far is Intro to Meteorology; I've been obsessed with the weather since I was young which stems from a childhood fear of tornadoes (Oklahoma isn't the best place to live with that phobia), but learning its mechanisms was fascinating to me and I almost switched my major because of how much I loved it. Sadly, I decided not to because I'm terrified of calculus and would rather eat a cricket than take it 4 times (I'm also terrified of crickets)!

Enough of the boring stuff about school! I'm Oklahoma born and raised; I love small-town Oklahoma, taking drives through the country, and every time I leave I get homesick. I went to LA once and I wanted to kiss the first oil well I saw when I got back. I'm a Gemini and an enneagram type 6 wing 5 and they both describe me perfectly! I'm super extroverted and I love spending time with people and especially my best friends. My enneagram type is called the loyalist, which is incredibly true because I would do absolutely anything for them. I currently live in a sorority on campus with my 3 best friends in ONE room which is crazy (but in a good way). I would consider myself to be an introverted extrovert in the way that I love being with people but my alone time is also very important to me. I do well when I have time for introspection and intuition, so being constantly surrounded by people, especially coming from quarantine, has been quite the adjustment. I feel my best when I have the windows down on the highway in the middle of nowhere, or when I'm able to take deep breaths surrounded by nature. I love to love people and know people deeply and my goal is always to make people feel cared about!

In my free time, I love to explore and listen to music that's way too loud. My love language is quality time, so I love just going to grab food or ice cream with friends and being spontaneous. I've never been a big TV or movie person, so I love just talking and being silly with friends! I love anything with cheese, hot wings, and english muffins. I'm lactose intolerant but my midnight snack of choice is always taco bell or ice cream (because no regrets). I'm gonna be problematic and just say I hate peanut butter and chocolate but I'll eat literally anything else you put in front of me and I love to eat. My diet is pretty particular; I don't eat red meat, dairy, fried food, or drink soda.  Some of my other hobbies include working out, baking or cooking, and politics! I have two dogs that I love and I adore my family, I have a younger brother and my parents are my best friends.

I hope you all have a great semester!

  1. Hi Sidney!

I wasn't sure if anyone was going to say it but I love that you're taking this class for Percy Jackson! I was a huge nerd for those types of books when I was younger too, which is probably what started my interest in these topics. I absolutely loved reading books that were based on utopias or mythology but slowly stopped as I got older and busier, so I'm excited to get back to it in this class!

  2. Hi Sydney!

You are quite the successful student over there! A sophomore working in the oil and gas industry already is super impressive! Also, I was a huge fan of the Percy Jackson series so you are not alone girl! I may or may not have taken this class for that reason as well! I loved how you shared about your hometown and your interests like going to grab ice cream with friends. My friends and I frequent Classic 50's a little too often haha! Thank you for sharing a little bit about yourself and I hope your semester is going well! :)

  3. Hi Sidney! Just curious -- why did you pick Spanish as a minor? It seems pretty different from your major and other minor. Also, I've heard lots of good things about the Percy Jackson books but I've only seen the movies unfortunately. I did hear that the movies are nothing compared to the books (isn't that how it always is) and are completely different plot and character-wise.

  4. Hi, Sidney!

Wow. That is a lot on your plate as far as school is concerned. I can't imagine studying Economics Pre-Law, studying a second language AND studying political science. How many hours are you taking a semester at that point?

Percy Jackson was also what got me in to mythology along with Harry Potter. I used to have a few supplemental books that explained where Riordan and Rowling drew inspiration from for their creatures and characters. Those series are why I almost always choose some sort of mythology, religion or folklore based class when I have an elective open.

  5. There is so much good Percy Jackson energy in the class this semester, Sidney! And have you read any of the Rick Riordan Presents books, where he is featuring the work of authors doing mythology from different cultures? I started reading those books last year, and they are all so good! Rick Riordan Presents- link ... and how great that you took that Meteorology course! My husband (now retired) used to teach that course, and of course it is very nice having my very own meteorologist in the house, available for instant consultation! But you are right about the calculus: after a certain point, meteorology is all about the math (my husband is a math geek, and I'm more of a language geek... so we both just geek out in our own ways). And yay for your two dogs: having fur friends is always great, and even more during the pandemic. Maybe they will make an appearance in a blog story post this semester as heroine and hero of their own story!

  6. Hello Sidney,
I also really enjoyed all of the Percy Jackson movies and books when I was younger. That it is honestly what got me more interested in greek mythology in high school. I am also from a very tiny town in the panhandle that strived off of oil and farming so I totally get where you are coming from. Oil is a huge industry and a lot goes on with in it so gas and oil law would super cool to do. Most of my hobbies include working out and hanging out with friends and family as well!

  7. Hi Sidney,
I am glad you decided to take this course, it seems like the perfect fit for you! I have never read the Percy Jackson books but I have seen the movies. I am from California so I have had to get used to the smaller feel of Oklahoma. I look forward to reading through some of your writings this year.

  8. Hey Sidney! What sorority are you in? I'm in one as well, Alpha Phi! Also saw that you loved the Percy Jackson series. Me too, I've always been obsessed with Greek mythology and thought those books were so great. What are your thoughts about the new Percy Jackson series that's coming to Netflix?

  9. Hi Sidney! I love seeing another economics major! I'm doubling in economics and math, so I really love all the calculus and mathematical applications that exist in economic statistical analysis (econometrics was one of my favorite classes so far - Dr. Ransom is so nice!), but it's so cool to remember all the different fields and applications for econ. I also ADORE Percy Jackson - have you heard of the Broadway musical The Lightening Thief? It isn't perfect (nothing is), but it is an incredible retelling of the story! I went to see it on Broadway over winter break last year, and it felt like everything I wanted the movie to be.

  10. Hi Sidney! I really enjoyed reading your introduction and learning a little bit about you! One thing really stood out to me: I thought it was great how you talked about that you love to love people deeply and help people know that they are cared for. That is such an amazing trait to have! I have also felt this way in my life and make it one of my priorities with my family and friends. I love enneagrams! They are so true and are super relatable. I am a type 2! Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  11. Hey Sidney, you had me at lactose intolerance because I'm in the same boat. I can't help myself when it comes dairy, specifically cheese, so if I ever eat anything that might tear me up I always rush home after. It's become a joke among my friends and family, but I'll absolutely suffer if it means I can enjoy pasta, but Taco Bell will do the trick too.

  12. Hi Sidney! That's awesome that you're pre-law, I know some lawyers and they love it. Haha I totally understand being obsessed with Percy Jackson, it was a great series! What kind of music do you like to listen to? I think it's amazing that you care so much about making people know you're there for them. Good luck this semester and in the future!

  13. Hi Sidney, I think your course arrangement is awesome. You got a clear life goal about yourself which is also amazing. For me, I still confused about whether I should stay in American or go back to China when I finish my courses here. We have the same feeling about meteorology. I also studied some meteorology knowledge in my first year at OU. I would say this field is fantastic.

  14. Hi Sidney!

I love to see that you're from a small town; I'm from Clinton, which is also a really small town and I've loved small towns ever since. I love to see pictures of your dogs! They're really cute, Honestly seeing all these introductions with dogs is making me miss my own. I also like to cook- I haven't had much of an opportunity since I don't have a kitchen of my own, but I started cooking dinner twice a week when we were all in quarantine. What's your favorite thing to cook? I hope you have a great semester!

  15. Hi Sidney! I love that you took this class because of Percy Jackson. Books are amazing and can get us into all sorts of things! I also appreciate your fear of crickets. When I was very young I tried to be brave and get a cricket out of the house on my own. It jumped onto my NOSE. Crickets and I do not get along now, I don't want them to jump on me ever, ever again. And of course, I love your dogs. Mine is sitting right next to me as I type this.

  16. Hi Sidney! Thats awesome that you are pre-law. I think that is so cool and crazy that you've wanted to do that since middle school. I also love being around people and find that I am happiest when surrounded by people. But I am similar in the way that sometimes I do need my alone time. Also your two dogs are adorable!

  17. Sidney,

Hello, It's nice to meet you! Upon reading your introduction, I have to say that I am very impressed by your love for school and the work ethic that you expressed in pursuing the dreams that you mentioned. It's been a while since I've actually met someone who was a Pre-Law, but you are also a Spanish and Political Science minor, which I find very interesting. When I was younger, I also considered being in the oil and gas field, but as a petroleum engineer. So this is a breath of fresh air to hear someone who is still currently very interested and motivated in this aspect of the economy as well! I look forward to reading from you soon.

  18. Hello Sidney,
It's a pleasure to read about you. I am actually impressed by the love that you have for school. And i am also fascinated by your desire of wanting to be a lawyer one day. I hope you get to accomplish your goals and get to move to Dallas. It's a very nice city. I enjoy every single time i spend when i go there. By the way i used to live in Dallas before moving to Oklahoma. Can't wait to read more of your stories.

  19. Sidney, nice to meet you! I am also pre-law and a Spanish minor. I think it's awesome that you already know where you want to go to law school. Two of my best friends just started law school at UT this year! I went to visit and it's a really cool campus (not to mention an amazing school). If you had any questions about it, I'm sure I could get you in touch with them! Also, I definitely was super into Percy Jackson as a kid. Honestly it's probably part of the reason I took this course as well! I hope you enjoy the rest of the class!

  20. Hi Sidney, I LOVE your sense of humor. Unpopular opinion I know, but I also love school. I love Taco Bell and ice cream, Like I’m obsessed. I love how you still eat it despite being lactose intolerant. You are very brave.I think it is great that you want to be a lawyer. You seem very passionate and motivated, and I am sure you will make a great lawyer. It was great to meet you! I hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  21. Hi Sydney :)
Evy and Wilson are SO cute! I love your enthusiasm and energy. I feel like the world at large could definitely use more people like you, and this is coming from a (normally) low-energy, introverted person. I didn't even know someone could get a degree in oil and gas law, but that's really cool you can. Saying you don't like peanut butter and chocolate is quite controversial! However, it's not as uncommon as some people think, especially outside the States. And I can definitely relate to you about being at home surrounded by nature and with your windows down on the interstate/highway.
I hope the rest of your semester goes well, too :)

  22. Hey Sidney! It's super cool that you want to be a lawyer! Hopefully it all works out and you're able to make your way to Dallas. I think I" would want to live there too. Going to such a big place seems really cool! your doggos are super cute. Please give them some pets from all of us! Hope you have had a great semester!

  23. Hi Sidney,

To start, thank you so much for sharing pictures of your sweet pups, Evy and Wilson! It always makes my day when I log in for school work and get blessed with cute pet pictures! I am an animal lover myself, so I think we would get along great! I think it is such an awesome thing that you plan on going to law school, I don't think I quite have the dedication for that. I think it is so interesting that you chose Spanish as a minor, this could be very helpful in your career depending on what type of law you pursue. I really enjoyed reading through some of your stories, and I hope the rest of this semester treats you well! Good luck! :)

  24. Hi Sidney!

Percy Jackson is what jump started my mythology love as well. I think Rick Riordan did that to a lot of people hah! I think that it is a great reason to check all of the other stories out. I took this class for similar reasons, but also because Thor Ragnorok made me fall in love with Norse mythology as well as Greek!
