Reading notes: King Arthur part A

• in britian, after uther pendragon died, every knight wanted to be king 
• the country became worse and worse and filled with evil
• merlin the magician went to the archbishop of Canterbury and agreed that the lords and gentlemen of britian would meet at the great church on Christmas day 
• at the church there was a large sword that said whoever pulled it out of the stone would be king 
• many people tried but were not able to pull it from the stone, so they had a tournament on new years day 
• sir kay, ector, and Arthur arrived to the tournament but forgot his sword so arthur went to get it 
• when he got to the house it was locked, so he went to the sword in the stone to pull it and gave it to sir kay 
• arthur told sir ector he pulled it so he was called the rightful king 
• his father said he was the son of uther pendragon and he was meant to be king 
• the people were reluctant to accept him since he was a common man, but every time they tried to contest it, he was the only one who could pull it
• he said he would kill any man who said he wasn't their king, so everyone bowed before him 
• he fought many battles that he would have lost without merlin and excalibur 
• king arthur went to the rescue of the king of cameliard and ended up marrying his wife guenevere 
• arthur went to carlion and had a strange dream where the land was overrun with serpents that were killing his people until he was able to slay them all
• he was riding through the forest and his horse died so they rested
• while he rested, a beast and hounds went to drink from a well
• he got a new horse and found a knight in the forest that said he wanted to slay the beast
• he gave the knight his horse and he rode away 
• merlin told him that uther pendragon is his father and lady igraine is his mother 
• merlin also told him that he would die a noble death and that he himself would be buried alive 
• he fought a battle with the tallest night and would have died if merlin didn't put him to sleep and take him to a doctor to heal
• he lost his sword so merlin took him to the lake and the lady of the lake gave him a new sword 
• he went out to the middle of the lake to retrieve the sword and chose it over a scabbard, which marlin said was a poor choice
• king arthur told merlin that his heart was set on guenevere, so he married her
• they sat around the round table and had their wedding 
• he made this poor cowherd Tor a knight and Gawaine as well 
• merlin met a woman that he fell in love with who used him for his secrets because he wouldn't tell her no 
• merlin left the king and traveled with the woman, and he prophesized that the sword and scabbard would be stolen by a woman he trusts 
• she wanted him to put all of his powers under a rock, so he went under a rock and she buried him alive 
• on the Pentecost the knights all sat around the round table when a loud crash happened and a bright sunbeam, and it was the holy graal
• gawaine stood up and went in quest of the holy graal, as did lancelot 
• every knight and the king and queen left in quest of the graal, 150 of them
