What Makes a Hero?

  • each hero story is a variant of the same hero
  • although there are different variations, each hero goes on the same type of journey with a different story
  • the hero's story is a cycle and begins and ends in the hero's 'ordinary world'
  • the hero's quest passes through an unfamiliar world
  • the cycle has multiple steps:
    • call to action from status quo
    • hero needs assistance
    • the hero crosses the threshold into the new world
    • hero faces trials and progresses
    • the worst fear or biggest battle is approaching
    • the time for the hero to face their biggest challenge
    • the hero faces a crisis
    • the hero is reborn
    • some form of treasure is claimed
    • results are obtained
    • return to ordinary world
    • new life
    • resolution
    • new status quo
  • this is a general model that many characters such as Katniss, Harry Potter, and more follow in their stories
  • we can relate to these people because these people are human- we all experience difficult and transforming experiences, and recover just to do it again
